• A Spiritual Director simply is someone who talks to you and prays with you about your life

    Henri Nouwen

  • Spiritual Direction provides an 'address' on the house of your life so that you can be 'addressed' by God in prayer.

    Henri Nouwen

  • Spiritual direction is not new. Christian spiritual direction goes back to the earliest days of the church, and its practice in Judaism and other religions was well established before that.

    David Benner

  • Spiritual direction is a never-ending journey in which a person looks for God amid their challenges and their everyday life.

Frequently Asked Question’s

  • Whatever you are walking through, I will set aside time and prayerful space to walk alongside you in your spiritual life. This is a time for you to leave behind the pressures of the day and embrace the simple gifts of the present moment, opening up to hear from God and learn to move at his pace. I would be so privileged to accompany you on your spiritual journey!

  • The conversation in a session is up to you. Our time together is a time for you to share in a confidential and safe space. This is a time for you and the focus is on you and your spiritual life. The word spiritual means life because God gave us our breath and our life. That means everything in our life connects with God.

We might spend time unpacking the day and seeking where you noticed God and where he seemed to be absent. Maybe you're going through a transition in life like the birth of a child, empty nest, retirement, or grief over a lost loved one. Spiritual Direction might be the place to share a personal struggle or a stuck place seeking God in all of it. Like life there will be things to celebrate and things to mourn together. Whatever the case we can walk together and discuss what’s going on.

Having time alone focused on you may seem selfish, but it’s a way to leave space for God to speak. Our lives have so many demands and distractions. Maybe making space for a soul friend or companion is the way to deepen your life and spiritual walk with God.

  • A typical session will go for approximately 90 minutes. We will meet where it is comfortable for you either in my home, a coffee shop, or at Lakeside Church. Our time together begins with the reading of scripture, prayer, and silence. This is called centering prayer, a way to let go of distractions and focus on God and listen to his voice. We then discuss what’s going on in your life and I bring up questions that help us notice God’s activity. You could be going through something difficult like grief, or loss, or simply struggling to find meaning in the ordinariness of life. Either way, in this process we aim to see where God is active.

  • As I begin I am offering the introductory price of $40 for a 90 minute session. Contact me if cost is an issue and we will work something out. There may also be exceptions. Also, as always, the first session is free.

  • Spiritual Direction is focused on your spiritual life and relationship with God through all of life’s experiences. In counseling or therapy there is a specific focus on working through an issue or solving a problem. Normally there is a beginning and ending date for counseling. Whereas the Spiritual Direction relationship can go on as long as desired. Another word for Spiritual Director could be “soul friend or companion” where we discuss all of life noticing where God is present or absent. The main voice that we are paying attention to is the Holy Spirit in this discernment process. Spiritual Direction does not replace counseling yet there may be overlap at times in subject matter and both are encouraged and valuable.
